From the tiny Chia Tai seed shop in Bangkok in 1921 a mighty enterprise has grown. By its own reckoning, the privately held Charoen Pokphand boasts 250 companies, 100,000 employees, and sales of $13 billion a year. Agribusiness is still at the heart of CP. One of the world’s largest makers of animal feeds, it also produces billions of chickens and eggs and millions of ducks and pigs. But as chairman and CEO, Chearavanont, son of one of the founders, went a step further, vertically integrating operations so that the company made money from every link of the food chain. He diversified into aquaculture---CP is now one of the world’s largest producers of shrimp---convenience stores, fast food, auto parts, insurance, and telecom. Although hit hard by Asia’s 1997-98 financial crisis, CP still has millions of mouths to feed. [] |
