What are the CP Group’s businesses?
"The CP Group’s business is all about supplying energy to the body and the mind. CP, started small as a family company, first in seeds, then through vertical integration, moving into feedmills, poultry, swine and duck breeding and processing. As opportunities developed, the CP Group extended its reach, first in Asia, then in the rest of the world, focusing on the dev elopment needs of the people. Today, agri-business, backed-up by a highly-experienced, international and professional management team, is still very much at the heart of the CP Group’s business activities, that now also includes telecommunications; marketing, distribution and logistics; international trading; petrochemicals; property and land development; crop integration, insurance; automotive and industrial; and pet foods."

Has there been an overall plan for CP's development?
"CP has grown with Asia, starting as a small store selling seeds to farmers, it took advantage of opportunities as they developed to broaden their horizon and this led first to feed production and poultry-raising, then ducks, pigs and finally freshwater shrimp in 1985."

How would you define CP's mission?
"CP is the source of human energy. Food is much more important than oil. Without oil, we can still survive but without food no one will live."

To what does the CP Group attribute its worldwide success?
"First and foremost, to the highly-skilled, experienced and international management people, at all levels, who contributed to the CP Group's mastery of the investment and development opportunities that have presented themselves around the world."

In how many countries around the world does CP have investments?
"CP has 'grown with Asia'. Today, this Thai-anchored business group has 250 companies in 20 countries around the world and employs more than 100,000 people. It is one of the single largest foreign investors in China, and stands at the forefront, as Asia's leading globally committed conglomerate."

Why did the CP Group move into telecommunications?
"Once again, it was a case of taking advantage of the opportunities brought on by Asia's changing lifestyle and the need to provide the people of Thailand with better and more extensive world-class telecommunications' services. We sought expertise and help from the US fixed line provider, Nynex, and Euro-centered Orange, when we were interested in setting-up Thailand's third 1800 MHZ mobile telephone service."

When did the CP Group enter into China?
"When China opened its doors to foreign investors for the first time in the late 1970s, we were the 'first' to seize the opportunities and realize the potential of serving a population of 1.3 billion people. Our first investments were in feedmills and later this led to poultry raising and integration, and further meat processed products, in 29 of China's 31 provinces. While agri-business has been CP's initial venture in China, recently this has been expanded to include other businesses; motorcycles, auto parts, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, herbal medicines, sports shoes, TV productions, hypermarkets and most recently, the Super Brand Mall in Shanghai."

Has the CP Group learned from the experience of other companies in furthering their development projects?
"The answer is definitely 'yes'; when we first started raising poultry, it was the US-based group, Arbor Acres, that supplied us with the both knowledge and the breeding poultry stock, so that we could start our own poultry farms. Another example is the help we received from the Japanese who joined with us to set up the first Thai Prawn Culture Centre."

Did the 1997 Asian financial crisis affect the expansion and developments plans of the CP Group?
"Like so many other conglomerates in Asia, the 1997 financial crisis definitely crippled our development plans but it didn't stop us from planning ahead. And while we had to postpone a number of projects, by the end of 1999, less than two years later, we were once again on track and moving ahead."
